In competitive swimming, 1 second can be the difference between 1st and 2nd. Making finals or not making finals. So adding time in the middle of a competitive swim season is not the direction you wanna go. In mid-December 2008, a "knot" appeared beneath the right shoulder blade of my son's back, we tried everything, heat, ice, back rubs with Ben-Gay, nothing seemed to be helping. At an invitational swim meet in early January 2009, he competed in the 200 free and added approximately 6 seconds to his best time. Hanging off the starting blocks with his swim cap and goggles in his hand after he finished the 500, my son looked up at me sitting with the look on his face that spelled out something is really wrong with my back. I was given a referral to a local massage therapist. After making contact with her, she listened to what was happening with my son and and, "You need to talk to one of my colleagues, Mike, he uses a new technique call, Myofascial Release, that I think will benefit your son."
